Most Expensive Cricket Bats: Prices and Records

The most expensive cricket bats fall into three groups: the top of each maker's standard range, which you can buy off the shelf for £600 to £1,500; bespoke and limited bats, where prices are rarely published; and bats with history, which sell at auction for six figures. This page lists all three with the prices as they stand, then explains what the money buys and when it is worth spending.

The Most Expensive Bats on Sale From the Makers

The makers' own shops go higher than any retailer range. Gray-Nicolls sell the Legend Gold Edition, which they say uses only the top 1% of available willow, for £1,499.99 with a carry case, and the Legend Platinum, from the top 5%, for £999.99. Kookaburra sell Pro Players Replica bats, matched to the profiles used by Jos Buttler, Marnus Labuschagne and Nat Sciver-Brunt, for £1,099.99, and their Pro Players Edition for £799.99. The most expensive bat in SG's Indian shop, the HP33 10 Years X, is listed at ₹219,999. These prices were checked on 14 October 2026 and makers change them often.

Bespoke and Limited Bats

Most makers offer a bespoke or concierge service, and none we checked publishes a price for it. The best indication is City AM's report in February 2026 that top Grade 1 bats had more than doubled in price over a decade, to around £1,000. The causes it gave were demand from Asia and North America, past under-planting and milder winters, which produce the wider grains that professionals avoid. That shortage is also why the MCC now allows laminated Type D bats in open-age recreational cricket, at under £200.

The Most Expensive Bats Ever Sold

Guinness World Records lists Bradman's 1934 bat as the most expensive cricket bat sold at auction; he used it for 304 at Headingley and 244 at The Oval, and the buyer agreed to keep it on display at the Bradman Museum in Bowral. Dhoni's bat, the one he hit the winning six with in the 2011 final, was sold at a charity dinner at the Hilton Park Lane. We found no verified record sale since 2021.

What the Money Buys

• Grade. The top grades are chosen for straight, even grain and a clean face. Gray-Nicolls say their grades fall in price on cosmetics and performance potential; Kookaburra define their Players Edition as at least six fairly straight grains. • Scarcity. Only a small share of each tree makes a top-grade cleft, and Gray-Nicolls price their Legend bats by that share: top 1% for Gold, top 5% for Platinum.
• Preparation and finish. Players Edition bats often come with more preparation done in house; Gunn and Moore, for example, extra-press and oil theirs and fit an anti-scuff sheet.
• The name. A player's edition or a limited run carries a premium for the association and the rarity.

Is an Expensive Bat Worth It?

For most players, no. Gray-Nicolls press every grade the same way and say the lower grades may simply take slightly longer to reach their best. What you get at the top is a cleaner, more consistent piece of willow and the best of the maker's selection, not a different shape. A club batter who plays every weekend gets most of the performance from a mid-grade bat between £300 and £450, and a junior who will outgrow the bat in a season gets almost nothing from a top grade.
