Kookaburra Kahuna Cricket Bats: Every Grade and Price

Kookaburra Kahuna cricket bat

The Kookaburra Kahuna is a high-sweet-spot bat with big edges, first made for Ricky Ponting and now the bat Jos Buttler uses. It is Kookaburra's longest-running family, and the shape is the same at every price: what changes between a £164.99 Kahuna and a £774.99 one is the willow. This guide explains the Kahuna profile, what each grade number means, the Lite and Big Kahuna versions, the junior sizes, and lists every Kahuna we stock with our prices on 16 October 2026.

The Kahuna Profile

Every senior Kahuna shares one set of measurements, which Kookaburra publish on their Kahuna range page and on each bat's listing:

  • Sweet spot: high, about 200mm to 210mm from the toe. That suits a batter who hits through the line and plays off the back foot, and it rewards good, bouncy pitches.
  • Edges: 34mm to 37mm, rounded, with a spine of 63mm to 67mm and only 1mm to 2mm of scalloping, so the weight stays in the blade.
  • Face and bow: a slightly rounded face and a 10mm to 12mm bow.
  • Handle: oval, with Kookaburra's Spira grip.
  • Weights: most short handles run 2lb 8oz to 2lb 10oz. The Lite starts at 2lb 6oz and the Big Kahuna at 2lb 12oz.

If you prefer a lower sweet spot for front-foot driving on slow club pitches, the Ghost or Nickel will suit you better; our guide to Kookaburra cricket bats compares every family.

What the Kahuna Numbers Mean

The number after the name is the willow grade, and it works the same way across Kookaburra's range: the lower the number, the cleaner and straighter the grain. Pro Players Edition sits at the top, then 1.1 Players Select, 2.1 Elite, 3.1 Icon, 4.1 Hero, 5.1 Legend and 6.1 Special. Below those, 6.2 Ultra and 6.3 Select have an English willow face on a Kashmir willow back, and the 7.1 and 8.1 juniors are alternative or Kashmir willow throughout. Older stock from 2024 and 2025 carries the same numbers without the names.

Kahuna Lite and Big Kahuna

Two versions change the balance rather than the shape. The Kahuna Lite pairs a shorter blade with a longer handle and comes in at 2lb 6oz to 2lb 8oz, for a player who wants the Kahuna's high middle with a quicker pick-up. The Big Kahuna goes the other way: the full Kahuna profile at 2lb 12oz to 3lb, for a strong player who wants mass behind the ball and is used to a heavy bat. Both 2026 bats are £319.99.

Ponting, Buttler and the Graphite Row

Ricky Ponting switched to the Kahuna in February 2002 and used it for the rest of his career, as cricket.com.au recounted when Kookaburra revived its old designs for the Bushfire Bash. In April 2005 the ICC asked the MCC to examine his graphite-backed Kahuna. The MCC found the carbon strip contravened the Law on what a blade may be made of, the ICC declared the bat illegal in February 2006, and graphite-reinforced bats were ordered out of first-class cricket by that October, a story Wisden has told in full. The Kahuna went back to plain willow and carried on. Jos Buttler is its current face: Kookaburra sell a Pro Players Replica of his Kahuna at £1,099.99, and the 2026 Kahuna listings carry his endorsement. Our page on what bats the pros use covers the other brands' players.

Which Kahuna to Buy

  1. Club player, hard ball every week: the 5.1 Legend at £269.99 or the 2025 4.1 at £239.99. Same shape as the top bats, more marks on the face.
  2. League player who wants cleaner willow: the Pro 3.1 Icon at £369.99, or the Lite and Big Kahuna at £319.99 if you want the balance changed.
  3. Occasional player or a second bat: the 6.2 Ultra at £219.99 or 6.3 at £164.99. Both have a Kashmir back, so they are heavier for their size and cheaper to replace.
  4. Players grade: the Pro 1.1 Players Select at £619.99 or the Pro Players Edition at £774.99, which sit in our Players Edition cricket bats collection.

Kookaburra's 2026 bats come with a pre-prepared face, which shortens knocking in but does not remove it. Our guide to knocking in a new cricket bat covers what still needs doing.
