World Test Championship Points System Explained

World Test Championship points are simple: 12 for a win, 6 for a tie, 4 for a draw and nothing for a loss, in every Test regardless of the series length, and teams are ranked by the percentage of available points they have won rather than by the points themselves. Slow over rates cost one point per over short. This page sets out the system in force for the 2025 to 2027 cycle, with worked examples, the tie-breakers, the over-rate penalties that have already moved the table, and the earlier system that older guides still describe.
Points per Match
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Win | 12 |
| Tie | 6 |
| Draw | 4 |
| Loss | 0 |
Every Test offers 12 points, so a two-match series offers 24 and a five-match series 60. That is the whole of the match scoring.
Percentage of Points
Because teams play different numbers of Tests in a cycle, the table ranks them by percentage: points won divided by points available in the matches played. A team that has won three and drawn one of four Tests has 40 points from 48 available, or 83.33 per cent. A team that has won five, drawn two and lost three of ten has 68 from 120, or 56.67 per cent, and sits below it despite having more points. When all series are complete the percentage and the points order converge, but during a cycle the percentage is the only fair comparison.
Worked Example
Take a team that plays a two-Test series and a five-Test series:
- Two-Test series: win and draw. 12 plus 4 is 16 from 24 available.
- Five-Test series: two wins, two draws, one loss. 24 plus 8 plus 0 is 32 from 60.
- Total: 48 from 84, which is 57.14 per cent.
Now dock two points for an over-rate offence in the five-Test series: 46 from 84, or 54.76 per cent. The penalty comes off the points won, not the points available, which is why a deduction hurts a team's percentage more than a draw does.
Over-Rate Penalties
Under Article 16.11.2 of the playing conditions a team that falls short of the required over rate loses one championship point for every over it is short, in addition to the fine. The penalties are real: England were docked 12 points after the Oval Test against New Zealand in June 2026, and by October 2026 had 14 points deducted in the cycle and sat on 38.54 per cent; Pakistan had 19 points deducted and sat on 4.63 per cent. A team that wins a Test and is docked twelve points has gained nothing from it.
Tie-Breakers
If two teams finish level on percentage, the ICC's published order separates them by the number of series won, then by percentage of points in away matches, then by the ICC Test rankings at the end of the cycle. Those tie-breakers have not yet been needed to decide a finalist.
The Old System
For the first cycle, 2019 to 2021, each series was worth 120 points divided equally among its matches: a Test in a two-match series was worth 60 for a win, one in a five-match series 24, and a draw a third of a win. It was abandoned because it made Tests in short series worth two and a half times those in long ones, and because the pandemic left teams with very different numbers of matches, which is when the percentage ranking was introduced. Guides that quote 60 and 24 points per win are describing a system that has not applied since 2021.
What Happens in the Final
The top two on percentage after the last series of the cycle play a one-off final in England; the 2027 final is at The Oval from 9 to 13 June. A drawn or tied final shares the title. The final has a reserve day, which is also why the follow-on margin in a WTC final stays at 200 even if the first day is lost. Our guide to the World Test Championship has the finals and the current table.
FAQs: WTC Points
How many points is a Test win worth in the WTC? 12, in every Test. A draw is 4 and a tie 6.
Why is the WTC table in percentages? Because teams play different numbers of Tests in a cycle. Percentage of available points won is the only like-for-like measure.
What is the WTC over-rate penalty? One championship point per over short, on top of the fine. England lost 12 points for one Test in June 2026.
How are WTC ties broken? Series won, then away-match percentage, then the ICC Test rankings.
Did the WTC ever use 120 points per series? Yes, in the first cycle only, 2019 to 2021. It was replaced by 12 points per match from 2021.

The current points system is set out by the ICC. The over-rate deduction is reported in the ICC's note on England's Oval Test penalty, June 2026. Current standings are from Wisden, 13 October 2026.
